Long Term Disability
Long Term Disability, unlike Short Term Disability, is a product that insures an employee on a 24 hour basis and coordinates the benefits from all sources of other incomes. The intent is to make sure there is a level of total income that replaces 60-70 percent of pre-disability income but never is a disincentive to return to work when able to do so.
Characteristics of benefits that are offered with Long Term Disability contracts are as follows:
- Monthly income benefit usually set at 60% of pre-disability income.
- Monthly benefit can range from $2500 to $15,000 as levels of pre-disability incomes qualify.
- A loss of at least 20% of your pre-disability income qualifies an employee for LTD benefits (This is called Residual Benefits).
- Elimination Periods usually range from 90 days to 12 months based on the needs of the employer if they are dove-tailing the LTD with a STD benefit plan.
- If there is no STD plan in place then 90 days is the standard Elimination Period.
- Benefits can be paid to Age 67 for Accidents and Sickness.
- Both white and blue collar employees can be insured.
